In Islam, marriage (Nikah) is widely regarded as a highly blessed contract and a significant part of faith. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) famously said, "Marriage is part of my sunnah, and whoever does not follow my sunnah has nothing to do with me." But is it strictly mandatory (Fard) for everyone? The 5 Rulings of Marriage
Islamic scholars categorize the ruling of marriage into five types based on a person's capability and situation:
1. Obligatory (Fard/Wajib)
Marriage becomes mandatory if an individual meets two conditions: they have the financial means to support a spouse/family, and they have an overwhelming fear that they will commit Zina (adultery/fornication) if they remain single. In this case, marriage is necessary to preserve one's chastity.
2. Recommended (Mustahabb / Sunnah Al-Mu'akkadah)
This is the general ruling for most people. If a person has the means to marry, desires it, and is confident they will treat their spouse fairly, it is highly recommended. It follows the Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH) and completes half of one's Deen.
3. Permissible (Mubah)
If a person has the means but does not have a strong desire for marriage (and does not fear falling into sin), marriage is permissible. They may choose to marry or remain single without incurring sin, though marrying is generally preferred for its social benefits.
4. Disliked (Makruh)
Marriage is disliked if a person fears they may not be able to fulfill their spouse's rights (financially or emotionally) or might treat them unfairly, even if they are not certain of it.
5. Forbidden (Haram)
It is unlawful for a person to marry if they are certain that they will oppress, harm, or fail to support their spouse. Islam prohibits entering a contract where one knows they will cause injustice to another.

While marriage is not universally mandatory for every single Muslim, it is strongly encouraged as a path to tranquility, love, and spiritual completion. It acts as a shield for one's character and a foundation for society.
