What Is the Marriage Age in Bangladesh in 2025?

Legal Gavel and Calendar

Understanding the legal age of marriage is critical for ensuring that any union is valid and lawful under the country's regulations. As we move into 2025, the legal framework regarding the minimum age for marriage in Bangladesh remains governed by the Child Marriage Restraint Act, 2017.

The Legal Minimum Age

There have been no changes to the standard minimum age requirements for 2025:

  • For Men: The legal minimum age is 21 years.
  • For Women: The legal minimum age is 18 years.

Any marriage involving individuals below these ages is considered a child marriage and is a punishable offense under the law, for both the families involved and the registrar identifying the marriage.

The Special Provision (Section 19)

The 2017 Act includes a much-debated "Special Provision." Under Section 19 of the Act, marriage below the legal age may be recognized in "special circumstances" if it serves the "best interest of the adolescent." However, strict conditions apply:

  1. It requires the consent of the parents or legal guardians.
  2. It MUST be approved by a court order.
  3. There must be a compelling reason deemed to be in the adolescent's best interest.

Despite this exception, the government and human rights organizations continue to advocate strongly against underage marriage to protect the health, education, and future of young citizens.

Goals for the Future

The Government of Bangladesh has reiterated its commitment to eliminating child marriage entirely by 2041. Efforts are underway to digitize the marriage registration system to prevent age falsification and ensure strict adherence to the 18/21 age limit.

At EWU Matrimony, we encourage all our members to uphold these legal standards and build their future on a foundation of maturity and consent.
